Karen Burge: The potential of hemp for food, fibre and medicine.
Karen is an advocate for a sustainable hemp industry that could be a solution to unemployment, whilst protecting land and water as a chemical free crop. Karen looks forward to sharing her passion about the potential of Hemp and it’s varied uses to make a variety of commercial and industrial products including rope, clothes, food, paper, textiles, plastics, insulation and biofuel. Karen is also committed to pursuing the legalisation of medicinal cannabis to assist those who suffer from certain medical conditions. Note: The NSW Government has developed the Medicinal Cannabis Compassionate Use Scheme to extend compassion to adults with a terminal illness. In May 2016, NSW Premier Mike Baird announced the change in name of the scheme and that the scheme is being reviewed to consider whether it should extend to non-terminal patients. Professor Mary O’Kane, NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer and Director of the Centre, is overseeing this review. The NSW Government has announced funding for clinical trials to further explore the use of cannabis and/or cannabis products in providing relief for patients suffering from a range of debilitating or terminal illnesses.
